For the rest of the winter break Maddox tried to keep himself busy. Before his brothers got off of school for winter break, days were slow, but between shoveling the driveway and getting in touch with old friends, he found enough to do. But when the late afternoon and evening came, his days became more exciting. Monk, James, and Johnny were all on the varsity basketball team, and the coach allowed him to practice with them, which was a good way to stay in shape for fieldball. On the rare occasion he wasn’t going to practice, he and the Klumps were attending their games.

But out of everything Maddox did during break, what he enjoyed the most was when he and his brothers were home together at night. Sometimes the activity of choice was ping-pong, games that often became highly intense. Other times they watched a movie. But as the night wore on, often they sat in the basement—just the four of them—and talked. Typically their conversations were a mixture of storytelling riddled with inside jokes only the four of them would understand, followed by unrestrained laughter. But every so often their conversations turned serious, and when they turned serious, they always seemed to meander to the subject of their mom and dad.
